Orval Trappist Ale

The pour is a clear orange/amber with flocculent frothy head and plenty of tiny bubbles wriggling from the glass. Hay-like grassiness and flowery notes rise from the glass, then transcend into an abundance of spicy smells. A hint of apples and dried cherries is also present. Incredibly complex.

The taste is slightly earthy, with peach cobbler hidden behind the mountain of apples. As the beer warms, more sugar comes out, with some caramel notes. It is smooth drinking with the right amount of carbonation and effervescence, with a slightly dry finish.

In a way, it really epitomizes the Belgian Pale style, but with a kick. It tastes like an accomplishment.
