For these eleven days, beer had the starring role.  L.A. Beer Week consisted of an array of local breweries, beer, tastings and cuisine in brewpubs, retaurants and taverns across Los Angeles and Orange County.

Island Brews

Kaua’i is famed for its diverse and scenic wonders, such as the 3,567-foot deep Waimea Canyon, stretching 14 miles across the western end of the island and often called the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”, water-sports galore like scuba diving, surfing, kayaking, snorkeling and of course, the 43 gorgeous white sand beaches.

We arrived to our hotel, the Aston of Maka’iwa in Kapaa.  Or, as Nicholas Cage would say in Honeymoon in Vegas, “Kap-a-A-A!” The balmy, beautiful evening led us to the hotel bar by the pool - Cooks Landing - where I ordered a 14 oz. Kauai Gold.  The local beer is brewed by Hawai‘i Nui Brewing.  It’s a light-bodied, all-malt golden ale that has a sophisticated bitterness balanced by a delicate citrus finish.   Kauai Gold is one of the go-to quaffs of the island, and is available on Kaua’i, Maui, Oahu and the big island of Hawai’i. The next day, we wondered around Kapaa.  And yeah, we were sucked into the timeshare lecture meeting for a couple hours.  But hey, we saved $200 on our car rental.  Having a proclivity towards pub-style nightlife - even on Kauai - we inquired into local pubs, as night fell.  As luck would have it, there were a couple within walking distance. Also in Kapaa, tucked in the Coconut Marketplace was the two room, wooden shack of a pub called Tradewinds.  We tried to order a Guiness, as it was September 24th (they turned 250 years old), but alas they were out of the popular stout.  We ordered a Longboard Ale, when suddenly it started pouring rain....lovely warm rain.  Apparently, Thursdays are DJ night, and he was impressing us with some older hip hop like Run DMC, a little bit of disco and altered Blondie with a rap background. Meanwhile, the Longboard Ales were going down easy.  This became obvious when my photographer began buying beers for the DJ and demanding EPMD.

Ventura Brewing

Anacapa Brewery is a nice spot to taste some local brews and some scrumptious food. Enjoy some filet medallions, Channel Islands fish tacos, or the two story brewhouse burger, while quaffing on the Pierpont India Pale Ale or the Rye Pale Ale.
