Could it be that one month is better than another for craft beer? I enjoy drinking craft beer just about any time for any reason, but February has a special place in the heart of California craft beer drinkers.

Homebrewer Highlight: Ross Steinberg

Ross Steinberg is the focus of my first homebrewer highlight. Having lived in Los Angeles, it may come as no surprise that he now brews beer for bands such as Prong, Ministry and The Swingin' Utters. Cool.

About Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
2013 marks the 20th Anniversary of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy's remarkable arrival onto the music scene. In it's first years, having secured their legendary residency at the Derby nightclub in Los Angeles, they reminded the world—in the middle of the grunge era, no less—that it was still cool to swing, big band style. Today the high-energy nine-piece ensemble continues the party and takes things to the next level with the 2013 release of RATTLE THEM BONES. The follow-up to the much lauded 2009 release, How Big Can You Get?; The Music of Cab Calloway, Rattle Them Bones still urges their millions of fans worldwide to shake and move to their inimitable grooves while also expanding their horizons with new musical inspiration and influence.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy was co-founded by Scotty Morris and drummer Kurt Sodergren. They made their debut in their hometown of Ventura, California in April of 1993 helping to usher in the swing revival founded on a colorful fusion of classic American sounds including jazz, swing, and dixieland mixed with the energy and spirit of contemporary culture. They proved to be among the standout groups that launched the new swing era in the 90's. The group, whose core lineup has been in place since 1995, includes Scotty Morris (lead vocals and guitar), Kurt Sodergren (drums and percussion), Dirk Shumaker (double bass and vocals), Andy Rowley (baritone saxophone and vocals), Glen "The Kid" Marhevka (trumpet), Karl Hunter (saxophones and clarinet) and Joshua Levy (piano and arranger.) Joining them on the road are Anthony Bonsera Jr. (lead trumpet) and Alex Henderson (trombone.)

About Aaron Neville
American R &B and soul singer, Aaron Neville, has transitioned seamlessly back and forth between solo work and his role in the first family of New Orleans music, the Neville Brothers. His first hit single was the landmark “Tell It Like It Is,” which held the Number One spot for 5 weeks in 1967. He went on to win Grammy Awards for his triple-platinum 1989 collaboration with Linda Ronstadt Cry Like a Rainstorm, Howl Like the Wind, and reached the Country charts with the title track of 1993’s The Grand Tour. A member of the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame, Neville recorded the gospel album I Know I’ve Been Changed in 2010. Neville’s latest album that was released in 2013, MY TRUE STORY, he revisits the doo-wop music he grew up with.

About Buddy Guy
At age 76, Buddy Guy is one of the world’s leading bluesmen. He is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, a major influence on rock titans like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, a pioneer of Chicago’s fabled West Side sound, and a living link to that city’s halcyon days of electric blues. Guy has received 6 Grammy Awards, 28 Blues Music Awards (the most any artist has received), the Billboard magazine Century Award for distinguished artistic achievement, and the Presidential National Medal of Arts. Rolling Stone ranked him in the top 25 of its "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time." In 2012, he was awarded the 2012 Kennedy Center Honors for lifetime contribution to American culture. In 2013 Buddy Guy released his first double-album set titled Rhythm & Blues. The set contains 21 tracks that feature contributions from a stellar and wide-ranging set of guests, including Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, and Brad Whitford of Aerosmith and rising guitar wizard Gary Clark, Jr.

About The Casey Lee Ball Foundation
A portion of the proceeds from the Rhythm, Wine & Brews Festival benefit the Casey Lee Ball Foundation.
The Casey Lee Ball Foundation is a nonprofit organization where 100% of every dollar donated goes directly to pediatric kidney research. There are over 50 terminal diseases, yet kidney research has no famous spokesperson, no glamour, and as a result, it is dramatically under-funded. Casey Lee Ball, third son of Sterling Ball, President of Ernie Ball, Inc., was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease at age two. At age five, while Casey and Sterling were recuperating from kidney transplant surgery at UCLA, they decided to create the Casey Lee Ball Foundation.

In the last six years over seven million dollars has been raised for the Casey Lee Ball Foundation. This is a true charity. No one will make any money from these auctions except pediatric kidney disease researchers dressed in white coats! Again, every dollar raised goes directly to research. There are no administrative fees, no overhead, and all management, accounting, and legal fees are done pro bono.

Our fundraising efforts help to pay for much needed research at Seattle Children’s Hospital, Texas Children’s Hospital, Cincinnati Children’s hospital and the Mattel Children’s Hospital at UCLA. As a result of this research, several new medicines have made it to market in record time and are now helping to reduce the side effects of kidney transplant anti-rejection medicines. At present, a transplant is only a treatment, not a cure for kidney disease.

When you go to UCLA for Kidney disease treatment, you go to the the Casey Lee Ball Kidney Research Center, where we endowed a chair. This represents a million dollar contribution and one of only six chairs at UCLA that are endowed, ensuring kidney research will go on in perpetuity.

Teri Fahrendorf - Road Brewer

I’d venture to say there are few women in the world that can claim they’ve been brewing beer professionally for nearly a quarter of a century. Before brewing was all the rage, Teri was a grain handling, wort boiling, carboy carrying, yeast pitching, beer fermenting, woman, in a male-dominated industry.
